MIRI: Community awareness and its members’ involvement in river clean-up activities are crucial to tackle river pollution issues.

“Direct dumping of solid waste into rivers should be prohibited and more awareness campaign should be held to elevate community awareness in order to control polluting activities,” said state Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin yesterday.

He was speaking at the launching of community awareness and river safety programme at Kampung Piasau Utara.

The event was an initiative organised by Lee’s ministry with the aim to enhance community especially those residing nearby the riverbank area on the importance of preserving and keeping the rivers clean.

Also present were Cr Jeffery Phang , Miri Mayor Adam Yii, Sarawak Rivers Boards chairman Dr Murni Suhaili and 130 of Kampung Piasau Utara villagers.

Lee also called on parents to always monitor the safety of children especially during the monsoon season.

“This is because during raining season, the river can flow rapidly and accidents can easily occur,” he told the crowds.
