KUCHING: Instead of subsidising flight expenses for Sarawakian students, the state government is urging the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) to increase the number of flights.

According to Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, MAVCOM and airline operators, should add more flights to allow Sarawakians to vote in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

“Flight prices can be decreased to a minimum,” he said after flagging off and officiating the opening ceremony of the Sarawak Adventure Race, Dragon Challenge 2022 at the Beliung Temple here, today.

He went on to mention that providing airline subsidies to students from Sarawak would be unethical since it would violate the Election Offences Act of 1954.

In addition, Abdul Karim also encouraged university students to vote and take advantage of the chance to travel to their respective polling stations.

“State leaders and the public have voiced complaints, which have prompted MAVCOM to decide on their prices and change their approach during this election period.

“Hopefully, with the changes made, it would assist Sarawakians living or studying in West Malaysia to come back to vote,” he pointed out.
