KUCHING WATERFRONT PROJECT

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has decided to extend the proposed waterfront project from Kampung Sungai Bedil to Kampung Tanjong up to Kampung Tupong here.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is a big project spanning 1.5km long and will cost RM30 million.

“Today, we have agreed to extend this project from Kampung Tanjong to Kampung Tupong and this will be implemented under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

“While over the other side, Kampung No.3 right up to Kampung Patingan will also be connected. This means that both waterfronts will be upgraded,” he said in a press conference after visiting the project site yesterday.

He said the Kampung Sungai Bedil to Kampung Tanjong waterfront project was already 30 percent completed and hopefully would be fully completed by end of this year or middle of next year.

“Also, not all the waterfronts are concrete whereby it uses soft landscape and with that we will also plant the area with flora and fauna which will make the area look more beautiful,” he said.

Abang Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, added the approach was to boost the Kuching city infrastructure from a tourism perspective.

“Once the whole project is completed, it will be able to attract not only the locals but also tourists where they can enjoy the beauty of the Sarawak riverside.

“At the same time, this will also provide many business opportunities to the local community here,” he said.

He added that construction of a cascading waterfall within the vicinity of Fort Margherita would also be completed soon.

“This beautification project will also include a road between Fort Margherita to the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building.

“As now we already have the Darul Hana Bridge, so the whole riverbank will be beatified and will definitely attract more people to come to this area, especially the tourists when all the projects are in place,” he said.
