Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when speaking to the reporters after officiating the event today said that the event can also create a strong family institution.

“I can see that those who participated in the event are parents bringing their children. I think this can become a memorable event where people from Sibu Jaya would talk about it for weeks,” he said.

Abdul Karim also noted that the event is the only one being held in Sarawak which he deemed as unique as well as interesting and should be held annually.

“I was told that this event had been held two times previously, but it was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, it has finally come back.

“We can see that the event is getting bigger and it is not just for the people of Sibu Jaya but outside Sibujaya as well.

“We can promote this as a local tourism product and indirectly boost the economy in Sibu Jaya,” he said.

For the record, the organisation of the water fiesta this year has been scaled back in the organiser’s move to use water responsibly and to stand in solidarity with residents who are affected by the low water pressure issue.
