KUCHING: Deputy Chairman of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK), Simon Siah Sy Jen issued a statement yesterday urging the police with the assistance of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct a thorough investigation on reports of the public receiving calls from a phone number 082-250195 that they are from the police station and required the person who picked up the call that they are either involved in an accident or their identity have been used for the purpose of money laundering.

The scammers’ eventual goals are to ask the victims to change their ATM pin number and even their authorisation phone number.

The police are also urged to establish a stronger system to stop spoofing of the phone numbers of the police stations and all government agencies. If even the calls from police station can be used as part of a scam, how then can we have confidence in the main enforcement agency in our country which is the Police Force themselves.

“We expect to be briefed immediately by MCMC and PDRM once the investigation is completed. “In fact during the last state election, several members of the opposition had their phones spoof as well which was used to send out messages without the phone owners’ knowledge.

It seems to be extremely easy for the scammers to obtain telephone details of individuals and to spoof them. We also urged MCMC and PDRM to immediately investigate how such scammers are able to obtain so many phone numbers of the public without their consent.

“The general public are also cautioned not to believe such a call from even the police station, it is always better to be safe than sorry by approaching the police station itself rather than speaking to the alleged police over the phone and we hope that the police force too will take notes of this and improve on their process when calling out from their official phone numbers.

“Last Monday one of my colleagues received such a call from 082-250195 who claimed to be from IPD Kuching, Simpang Tiga. From the search we have done, the said phone number does in fact appear in the directory of the Royal Police Malaysia website at https://www.rmp.gov.my/direktori/direktori-pdrm/sarawak/kuching.

“During the scam process, the scammer also used another phone number 03-21460522 which again can be found at https://www.rmp.gov.my/direktori/direktori-pdrm/kuala-lumpur. “The scammer seems to be able to spoof even the phone numbers of the police stations all over Malaysia and has used it to convince the victims to do through intimidation and using their alleged status as the police to do so.

“Some of the scammers even introduced himself as Korporal Anuar (R176671) from IPD Simpang Tiga, Kuching, another as Korporal Koo from Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah (JSJ) and Sergeant Tan and Puan Narita binti Yaakub as the investigating officers.

The scammers seem to be very aware of the structures and the titles of the police officers in Malaysia.

“Luckily for my colleague, she did not lose anything as she managed to stop the scam before anything else happened and gone to the police station yesterday to lodge a report for the police to take action immediately,” said Siah in a statement. Simon Siah Sy Jen.
