KUCHING: The State government yesterday approved a piece of land for the extension of the Gurdwara Sahib Temple in Jalan Masjid here.
In making the announcement during the Vaisakhi Day celebration at the Gurdwara Sahib Temple yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the approval was the first step taken by the government to develop the temple together with other attractions in the area.
He said the government has a long-term plan to develop the area as a heritage trail.
At the event, Abang Johari who is also the Satok assemblyman announced the approval of a piece of land in Batu Kitang near here as a cremation ground for the Sikh community.
He said although there were not many Sikhs in the state, the community could still contribute new ideas to develop Sarawak and ensure the people in the state remain united.
Also present at the event were his wife, Datin Amar Dato Hajah Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Works Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof and Sarawak Sikh Temple Association President Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira.
