KUCHING: Businesses should not take advantage of the current haze situation to put unreasonable prices for face masks.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen said this in a press conference here at the Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters yesterday.

“In this situation, many are going to shops to purchase face masks and we don’t want any business to hike up the price of the face masks and make unreasonable profits during this time.

“We have contacted the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) to get the accurate prices of the masks used as the N95 masks and surgical masks are controlled items.

The common surgical mask-controlled price is RM0.80 per piece while the recommended ceiling price for the N95 mask is RM6.

“Should the consumers find that any of the shops selling the masks at a higher price than the agreed price, they are advised to make a report to the ministry as it is against the law to increase the price for controlled items.

“They can make the report to the ministry itself at Jalan Simpang Tiga or via the Portal e-Aduan in the KPDNHEP website.

“But consumers need to have adequate information such as the name of the shop, its location and the time of purchase before making the report,” said Dr Yii.
