Ops Mabuk nets three tipsy motorists

KUCHING: Traffic police here arrested three individuals on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’ on Saturday (Feb 11).

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement, said the operation involving 16 personnel led by Insp Ngang Kalimpot, took place at Jalan Padungan from 11 pm (Saturday) to 4 am this morning.

The team had detained four men and a woman aged between 25 and 42, who were believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

“All of them were taken to the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD) to undergo breath analyser tests.

“Results found that three of them had alcohol content in their body exceeding the allowable limit while, the other two were tested negative for alcohol,” he said.

The suspects will be investigated under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine up to RM30,000 or a jail term of up to five years and licence disqualification for up to five years, if convicted.

Ahsmon added that the team also issued a total of 36 traffic summonses for various traffic offences after inspecting 125 people in 114 vehicles.
