PADAWAN: Police have deployed additional manpower and assets in their search for two Indonesian escapees as ‘Op Kesan’ entered its third day yesterday.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said another 24 officers and policemen were deployed in the search operations.

In addition, a police K9 Unit from Sibu is also being deployed to help with the search operations.

“The search radius is also widened to increase the probability of capturing the two escapees.

“The two escapees, Kelvin, 21, and Bony, 31, both from East Java, were being investigated for immigration-related offences.

“If they are found and arrested, they will be charged under the Penal Code for evading arrest, for which they can be jailed for two years or fined,” said Mohd Azman during a media conference at the Tapah police station yesterday (June 14).

Mohd Azman briefs the media on the progress of Op Kesan at Tapah police station while Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata (left) listens.

He said that the weather conditions and the surrounding forest could affect the escapees while on the run.

“There is a possibility that they can survive in this unpredictable weather, but they may not last long until they are caught.

“We have also received tips from the public of the sighting of the pair in village areas.

“I remind the public to relay information to the police of anything suspicious and report it to the nearest police station,” he said.

When asked if the police will cooperate with Indonesian police on the case, he said the contingent will contact Bukit Aman and Interpol to reach out to Indonesian police for cooperation.

The pair escaped from Tapah police station on June 12 while being investigated under immigration-related offences.

Anyone with information or who comes across the escapees is urged to contact the operations room at Padawan district police headquarters (IPD) at 082-862233 or any nearby police station.
