KUCHING: Motorists have made lots of complaints on premises’ owners who put objects on parking space or spaces in front of their premises to ’reserve’ the lots for their own vehicles, a press statement from North Kuching City Commission (DBKU) said yesterday.

These parking spaces are meant for public parking and not in any way meant for owners of premises. Most of the complaints pertaining to this issue were regarding owners of new business premises in Jalan Satok and Jalan Kulas as well as other new business premises resulting from selfish and irresponsible premises’ owners who are not sensitive to the fact that these parking spaces are meant for the public and not for the special privilege of any owner.

Let it be known that DBKU has obtained the approval by the State Government for the area to be gazetted as public parking space. As such the parking of vehicles there is based on the policy of ‘First Come First Serve Basis’ and that there should not be any such thing as ‘reserved parking’ for anybody, including premises’ owners.

DBKU hereby requests for cooperation of all quarters so that the ‘selfish’ parking issue is amicably solved. Vehicles’ owners should be selfish and should be considerate to others as far as parking lots are concerned. Any negative attitude on parking can never bring any good but instead is a possible catalyst for misunderstanding and quarrel between motorists. At the same time, owners of premises concerned might even lose their customers if they remain selfish with parking lots in front of them. DBKU is compelled to stress that actions can be taken on anybody found not complying with parking regulations including committing an offence of obstructing public parking space with irrelevant items under Article 18 (1) The City of Kuching North (Cleanliness By Laws) and under Article 20 (1) of the Road Transport (Provision of Parking Places) (City of Kuching North) Order, 2005.

All vehicle users in Kuching and DBKU area are kindly urged to prevent any negative elements on parking matters from breeding. Without the kind cooperation of all, this ‘sick’ parking attitude will not be able to be fully cured.
