MUKAH: The federal government has approved SMK St Patrick Parent-Teacher Association’s (PTA) application to purchase 400 new desks for the new school building.

This was confirmed by PTA chairman Zaidi Morshidi yesterday when asked about the status of the application.

It was made during SMK St Patrick’s Excellent Students Award ceremony at Dewan Suarah Mesra here on Oct 24.

During the ceremony, Works Minister Baru Bian, who was represented by his political secretary Zehegkiel Piree, read the minister’s text of speech.

“Baru has contributed to assisting (in the purchase) and now in the process of making the desks,” Zaidi said through WhatsApp.

He added that next year Baru would arrange for a handing over ceremony and the date would be announced later.

According to Zaidi, approval of the application was made on the same day of the award ceremony.

The new classroom building will enable the school to have morning classes only next year.

When asked whether the desks would be ready before the school term begins January next year, he said: “It will be on time as the contractor has informed that work will be completed before Dec 31.”

Zaidi added that for electric supply “there is no problem as payment had been made.”

It is learned that the desks would be used by the school to commence a single session class at its new three-storey building next year.

Since 1993, the 114-year-old school, with more than 600 students, had been having morning and afternoon classes due to lack of classrooms.
