KUCHING: The Federal Education Ministry was told to reconsider its decision to reopen schools on Sept 1.

The Malaysian Parents Consultative Association (Mapim) Sarawak branch’s acting chairman, Datuk Rozalix Edi Wahab said public health must be prioritised amid the current Covid-19 situation.

“Therefore, for now, we must postpone the face-to-face school session and focus on the safety and health of teachers, parents and students,” he said Sunday (Aug 15).

He added that the parents would be worried about their children’s safety if they had to send them to school.

“If the schools open, not only will the students be exposed but also the teachers.

“Furthermore, at present, it is said that Covid-19 cases have spread to many villages and areas,” he added.

Rozalix said if parents were not confident in sending their children to school, there would be a drop in the student attendance in school.

He also urged the government to speed up the vaccination of students at this time.

“The vaccine should be given to Form 5 and Form 6 students.

“The same goes for students who are not sitting for SPM and STPM examinations, namely Form 4 and below, who have not been vaccinated,” he said.
