Sarawak records increase in cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded an increasing number of cases at 2,427, compared to the previous day (2,224 cases), along with four fatalities on Saturday (Aug 28).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said of the cases, 2,422 or 99.8 percent comprised Category 1 and 2 while two cases were in Category 3 and three cases from Category 5.

Kuching district accounted for the highest number of cases at 1,155, followed by Serian (434); Sibu (147); Samarahan (93); Bau (80); Simunjan (63); Bintulu and Tebedu (29 each); Song (48); Pusa (32); Betong (31); Selangau (26); Miri (23); Tatau (21); Limbang (20); Saratok (19); Subis (17).

Fifteen new cases were each reported in Kapit and Beluru; Mukah (13); Sarikei and Lundu (nine); Lubok Antu (eight); Belaga and Kabong (seven each); Sri Aman and Asajaya (five each); Marudi (two); and one case each in Dalat, Pakan, Julau, Sebauh, and Meradong.

A total of 1,804 of the new cases are individuals who had close contact with positive cases, 300 cases are individuals in existing clusters, 136 cases from screening of symptomatic individuals at health facilities, 183 cases from other screenings at health facilities, two Import A case from individuals returning from Indonesia, and another two were Import B cases from individuals returning from Johor and Terengganu.

On another note, the committee said 611 cases have recovered and were discharged from hospitals and low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs) statewide.

This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases to 87,029 or 79.32 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak. There are still 21,976 active cases remaining.

The committee also said that the four fatalities recorded today involved the elderly in the state.

The 514th death involved a 91-year-old female from Bau who was confirmed positive on Aug 22. She was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and had a history of high blood pressure.

The second death was a 60-year-old female from Sibu who was confirmed positive on July 15. She was brought to Sibu Hospital for further treatment and has a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and heart disease.

The third death was also a female from Kuching district aged 71. She was tested positive on Aug 26 and was admitted to SGH for treatment. She had a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.

The final death recorded today was a local man from Serian who is also 71-years-old. He was admitted to SGH and was tested positive on Aug 17. He had a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic lung disease and vascular dementia.
