KUCHING: Sarawakians residing overseas have been advised to register with their nearest Malaysian Embassy or Consulate.

Fenny Nuli, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasised the importance of registration, not only for tracking the population in countries but also for safeguarding the well-being of Sarawakians in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

“The details include how many of them live in supposed countries, but also their background, and those who have families are advised to register at the Malaysian Embassy whether it is through High Commission of Malaysia or Consulate General of Malaysia.

“We also advise Malaysians travelling abroad to register at the embassy, and to ask them to let the embassy know where they are heading next.

“As previously mentioned, this measure aims to safeguard their well-being should they encounter unforeseen events like natural disasters or conflicts in countries they are travelling in or live in,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

On the latest update on Sarawakian students living in the Middle East, Fenny stated that they are safe at the moment.

“If there is any latest update in regards to our students living in the Middle East, we will let the media know about it,” she said.

Earlier Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg affirmed that the state government maintains regular communication with the Sarawak Regional Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the potential repatriation of students from the Middle East.

However, he said there has yet to be guidance from the ministry regarding bringing Malaysian students, including those from the state, home amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“If the Foreign Affairs Ministry together with the Higher Education Ministry give the opinion that our students who are in the Middle East should be brought out, we will follow the instructions.

“Hence we are waiting for advice from the Foreign Affairs Ministry,” he said.
