KUCHING: The Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak state government have set their sights on the advancement of wushu.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of SSC, Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan, affirmed that the sports present numerous opportunities for medals at the upcoming Sukma 2024 event.

“Sarawak will concentrate on sports that offer a high medal count, such as wushu to increase our chances of emerging as champions,” Awang Putrayusrie said.

“With up to 25 medals up for grabs in the wushu category, meticulous planning will play a vital role in securing these medals.”

He said this during a press conference following the opening ceremony of the Kuching Division Wushu Championship 2023, which took place at the Aeon Mall Kuching today (June 3).

Furthermore, Awang Putrayusrie said that holding tournaments at shopping malls effectively raises public awareness of wushu.

“Previously, tournaments were confined to closed halls, limiting the public’s ability to fully appreciate its performances of the participants,” he said.

He also highlighted that the participation in the wushu tournament is not restricted to the Chinese community alone, as other communities are actively joining the competition this time.

“Wushu is an inclusive sport that welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds and all communities in Sarawak,” he added.

Moreover, a total of 140 participants took part in the tournament, contributing to Sarawak’s wushu sports development plan.

Also present at the event included deputy president of the Wushu Federation of Sarawak, James Ting Ing Seek, vice president of the Wushu Federation of Sarawak, Ling Ung Hee, and chief coach of the Sarawak Wushu team, Yoong Thong Foong.
