KUCHING: Selected karaoke centres with closed-door rooms are preparing to open their doors on Aug 15 after being closed for over four months following the Covid-19 pandemic.

One such centre, K11 has already finalised its standard operating procedure (SOP) for its three branch premises in ST3 Commercial Complex, Hills Shopping Mall and Aeon Mall here.

K11 executive director Fam Wee Chiang said the Ministry of Local Government and Housing Sarawak had already approved the SOP for the premises.

“We came up with our own SOP which we see fit to be applied during our business operation and then we complement them according to the guidelines set by the federal and state governments.

“We will provide sanitiser spray and microphone covers in each karaoke room for the use of customers. We also place cross marks on the seats as a guide for our customers to adhere to social distancing,” he said.

Fam told this to a delegation from the ministry and the media during a monitoring visit to the K11 centre in ST Commercial Complex here yesterday.

The centre here has 30 staff divided into two shifts in serving and monitoring the customers.

“We have 31 karaoke rooms so each staff will be tasked to look after two rooms,” he said.

He stated that each room would have limited capacity at any one time as they had reduced the capacity to 50 percent compared to before Covid-19 crisis.

“The biggest room, namely Suite Room, used to accommodate up to over 30 customers but now we will only limit it to 16 persons at a time.

“Meanwhile the VIP Room, which used to accommodate up to 26 persons, can only accommodate 12 people at a time.

“We have rooms with different sizes so the room capacity depends on the size. The smaller the room, the lesser the number of room capacity. Notice will be displayed at every door,” he elaborated.

Fam added that the government had made it compulsory for every room to display signage on the SOP and thus, the K11 had gone all-out to adhere to the directive.

“Apart from putting signage on the tables and doors, we also have visual montage of the SOP reminder on the karaoke TV screen as well,” he said.

He thanked the Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian for allowing closed-door karaoke rooms to resume operation this Aug 15.

For the record, karaoke centres with the ‘open concept’ are still not allowed to open.
