KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will take stern action against individuals involved in illegal dumping.

Describing the situation as worrisome, DBKU mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan revealed that the council was forming a task force committee from its enforcement officers to monitor the situation.

“We have received many complaints that Metrocity has become a hotspot for people to dump wastes and unwanted materials.

“Apart from rubbish, most of the wastes are materials from construction sites,” he told reporters when met at DBKU lobby after attending Innovative and Creative Circle (KIK) Group and LEAN DBKU Project Management Year 2019 Convention here at the city’s hall headquarters in Semariang yesterday.

He said Bandar Baru Semariang was one of the illegal dumping hotspots in Kuching’s north area.

“Hygiene and cleanliness, these two issues are never-ending. We will work with corporations and companies in Metrocity to patrol the area so that we can catch these perpetrators,” he added.

Reminding the public to take personal hygiene as top priority, Junaidi further said promoting cleanliness and hygiene was everyone’s responsibility.

“It all starts from your heart. This is your real home that educates you on cleanliness responsibility. The media plays a vital role in educating the public,” he added.

Junaidi went on to say that the council was working on improving the drainage system in areas under its jurisdiction.

“The state government has approved about RM20 million to upgrade the drainage along few roads at the city centre to prevent flash floods.

“We are planning to widen the drains at Jalan Masjid, and Padang Merdeka road. “This project is considered as a sick project due to the delay of its completion. Overall, there are about five projects related to drainage and we hope the project can be executed as soon as possible,” he added.
