KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang does not agree with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call to his party members to fight for their race and religion.

Dr Mahathir who is also the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman had on July 20 stated that leaders should fight for race, religion and the country instead of fighting for personal interests or high positions.

“We do not fight for our own interests, but we fight for race, religion and the country, so when we succeed we will be looked upon highly and respected after sharing all the benefits amongst us,” he said in his opening speech at the party’s extraordinary general meeting.

Lo questioned the need for Dr Mahathir to emphasise race and religion again and again and whether the public should construe this to mean that Tun M’s top priority as the leader of this country was to fight for race and religion.

“Does he not realise that he is the Prime Minister of a multicultural country and that one of the most important tasks of the leader of our country should be to unite all the people in the country, be they Malay, Chinese, Indians, Ibans or Dayaks.”

Lo said when Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the election, it was not only the Malays who voted PH but also the Chinese, Indians, Dayaks, Ibans and many other minority groups.

“Now that the battle has been fought and won, are the people of the minority races being conveniently chucked aside?” he asked.
