Two new deaths bring toll to 211

KUCHING: Sarawak reported two new Covid-19 deaths on Tuesday (May 11), bringing the death toll to 211.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said, “The first case involved a 63-year-old local woman from Sibu district who received treatment at Sibu Hospital. She was confirmed positive through close contact screening on May 5.

“She was coughing for two days before being confirmed positive. Her condition deteriorated and she died on May 10. The woman had liver disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.”

SDMC said the second case was a 64-year-old local man who had shortness of breath and symptoms of cough and fever for three days.

“His swab test on May 4 was positive. His health deteriorated and he was pronounced dead on May 10. The man had high blood pressure and diabetes.

The committee said 512 new Covid-19 positive cases were also recorded today, bringing the cumulative total number of cases to 36,321.

It said a total of 326 or 63.67 percent of the total cases were detected in Miri, Bintulu and Subis districts.

“The districts that recorded cases today are Miri district (160), Bintulu (91), Subis (75), Sibu (47), Kuching (31), Beluru (21), Tebedu (13), Kanowit (12), Sri Aman (eight), Selangau (eight), Mukah (seven), Pusa (seven), Saratok (six), Dalat (five), Serian (five), Sarikei (four), Samarahan (four), Tatau (two), Sebauh (two), Meradong (one), Lawas (one), Pakan (one) and Betong (one).

“Of the total, 385 cases were detected through screening of individuals who had contacts with Covid-19 positive cases. 55 cases were detected through individual screening in existing active clusters.

“48 cases were detected from other screenings in health facilities including one case involving individuals coming to or returning from other districts in Sarawak. 24 cases were detected from screening of symptomatic individuals in health facilities,” added SDMC.
