KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) organised the “Unimas Class of 2020 Virtual Ceremony” to celebrate 3,210 undergraduates and 343 postgraduates who have completed their studies in their respective fields this year. It was a great success.

Unimas Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the completion of studies was a joyous event particularly for the batch that persisted through a worldwide pandemic that made study more challenging compared to normal learning norms.

“It is not easy to be the pioneer batch that completes learning through a full online method. It is not easy to persevere through novel challenges in a new, trying era.

“The class of 2020 is a special batch indeed. You have shown us that anything is possible if you have the will and the determination,” he said when officiating at the virtual event today.

Due to the global health situation that is still dynamically unfolding, Unimas has decided to postpone the 2020 Convocation Ceremony that was originally scheduled in October, he explained.

However, he assured that the ‘Unimas Class of 2020 Virtual Ceremony’ was not to replace the convocation, but to celebrate the graduates and their families. The actual convocation will be held when the situation permits.

The vice chancellor added that in the current situation, employment opportunities may be limited due to the world economic crisis, but there are many opportunities outside waiting to be explored.

He suggested that entrepreneurship was one of the career branches that graduates could venture into and could help create jobs and in turn to help prosper the economy in their respective country or region.

“It probably will be a good platform to give back to the community. Giving back to the place you call home helps to unite the community and to bridge some of the social, economic, and political gaps.

“Be kind and be competitive in any field that you are pursuing. Bring along the spirit of ‘Unimas, Teguh Bersama (Stronger together)’ everywhere you go. Be the change that the world needs,” he said.
