KUCHING: Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian is pleading to Sarawakians for their cooperation to prevent Kapit Division from becoming the next Covid-19 hotspot.

He raised his concern following the 78 cases reported in the Kapit Division on Feb 7, with 25 cases in Kapit District, Song District (50), and Bukit Mabong District (three) in a Facebook post on Sunday (Feb 7).

He said it was also worrying to see that in Sarawak, 40 percent of Covid-19 cases are symptomatic compared to 20 percent of symptomatic cases reported globally.

“(We) lost another Sarawakian in Sibu to Covid-19. Sibu has accounted for more than 50 percent of Covid-19 deaths in Sarawak.

“Please don’t be deceived just because deaths mainly occur among the elderly, because no one knows the long-term effects of Covid-19.

“So, let us pray for the speedy recovery of 1,874 Sarawakians,” he said.

He said Sarawakians must remember and thank the thousands of frontliners who have been overwhelmed, overworked, and exhausted despite limitations in experience and resources.

“Don’t give up the containment phase just yet. Let’s prevent Sarawak from joining the rest of Malaysia in the mitigation phase in the war against Covid-19,” he said.

Dr Sim also urged Sarawakians to minimise their movements, stay home as much as possible, work from home (if possible), and to ‘tapau’ (takeaway) food instead of dining in to curb the spread of Covid-19.
