KUCHING : Representatives of St Joseph’s School Class of ‘79 yesterday morning presented a cheque for RM36,161 to the President of the Old Josephians’ Association and  Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The presentation ceremony was held at the school.

The money will be used to repair classrooms in the Mill Hill Block of the school.

Sim  thanked the former students for their loyalty
to the school and for kick-starting the fundraising efforts.

He said the school had churned out a lot of professionals and ministers who  should not forget their roots.

The school, built over 135 years ago, is wearing down and Dr. Sim said funds were  needed to maintain the buildings and ensure they were safe.

The school was designed  by Father Haidegger and declared open by Rajah Charles Brooke in 1894.

After it was reported   the Mill Hill Block was in such a poor condition that many classrooms had been deemed
unsafe, a group of Josephians from the Class of ‘79 quickly passed the word — and the hat
— around and raised over RM31,000 in just a few days.
