Man arrested for meth possession, may face death penalty

SIBU: Police arrested a 32-year-old local man after seizing drugs estimated to be worth almost RM13,000 from him yesterday (Feb 16).

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect was arrested at a hotel in Lorong Ek Dee here at 7.10pm.

“Seven packets containing crystallised substance believed to be methamphetamine with a total weight of 129.59 grams were found on him,” he said.

Total seizure was value at RM12,959.

“The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while a background check on the alleged suspect found that he has 18 past criminal records related to drugs,” he added.

The suspect has been remanded for six days for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted under Section 39B, the suspect could face the death penalty.

Meanwhile, if convicted under Section 15(1)(a), the suspect may be fined up to RM5,000 or sentenced to a two-year jail term or both, and be placed under supervision for two years under the Section 38B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
