MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Curtin University Malaysia to transforming the city into an Age-Friendly City and Communities (AFCC) under United Nations principles for older persons.
The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday here.
MCC was represented by Mayor Adam Yii while Professor Simon Leunig, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Curtin University Malaysia signed on behalf of Curtin University.
According to Yii, the MoU signifies the commencement of a noble cooperation for a period of five years.
The implementation of AFCC will cover  baseline assessment for Curtin to conduct discussion and survey for data analysis.
Based on data analysis Curtin will recommend to MCC the strategy and action plan, to allow the council to get approval, secure support and resources for implementation.
According to Yii the UN principles for older persons are plans of action for the ageing population, encouraging governments to incorporate the principles of independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment and dignity for older persons.
“So far, 1,333 cities in 47 countries are implementing AFCC under the WHO Global Network for AFCC,” he said.
“Miri City Council recognises the matter of population ageing in Sarawak and the importance of formulating a plan of action for the well-being of the people in Miri,” Yii added.
Also present at the MoU signing were Pro-Chancellor of Curtin University  (Curtin Malaysia) Datuk Patingii Tan Sri Dr George Chan and his wife Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enam Muloon.
