PADAWAN: The community must change its mindset and habits when it comes to solid waste management to preserve the cleanliness and wellbeing of the environment.

Padawan Municipal Council MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said that the practice of recycling and maintaining cleanliness, especially in residential areas, should start from oneself.

“That habit can then educate and nurture our children to do the same, whether at home or at school,” he said in his speech at the prize-presentation ceremony in conjunction with the Joint Solid Waste Separation and Recycling Programme at SK St Francis Xavier, Seratau this morning (Feb 2).

Also present was MPP deputy chairman Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.

He noted that MPP always prioritises the issue of solid waste management and environmental conservation to increase public awareness.

“With the increase in population and the rapid development of economic and technological activities, the amount of solid waste is also increasing.

“Hence, we need to implement various methods together for the environmental wellbeing as we aim for a higher recycling rate.

“However, that can only be achieved if the community has the awareness to take responsibility in preserving the cleanliness and wellbeing of the environment,” he said.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman also stressed that such a programme is very important because it can nurture children and the community to become cleanliness ambassadors.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in this programme, no matter how small your contribution, it is still appreciated and should be emulated. Without realising it, actions like this will bring great changes to our environment

“All of you, the students, will be ambassadors of a clean environment, not only for the school but also for the entire residential area and society at large.

“The attitude and awareness in maintaining cleanliness will also carry the good name of Sarawak wherever you go, including abroad or to the peninsula,” he said.

The programme organised by the school and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd aims to raise the awareness of students and the school community on the effects of inappropriate disposal of plastic waste on human health and the environment.

At the same time, the programme also intends to educate and control the illegal disposal of waste products such as plastic, paper and aluminum materials on roadsides and illegal dumping areas that can cause breeding grounds for mosquito nests and rats.

This morning’s eco fashion show saw the crowning of pre-school student Faylin Grace Bowie as the winner, while Alvica Rosaria Alvin (Year 1) was the runner-up, and coming in third was Year 4 student Ryan Seacrest Royson.
