Sarawak Muay Thai exponents bag 13 gold medals at Sabah championship

KUCHING: The 2024 Sabah Muay Thai Championship, held at Level 3, Aeropod Kota Kinabalu Sabah from Feb 29 to March 4, witnessed a stellar performance by young Muay Thai exponents from Sarawak, who clinched a total of 13 gold, six silver and six bronze medals.

The medal contributors consisted of athletes representing the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC)/Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) teams, along with contributions from five clubs: Sting Muay Thai Sarawak, D30 Miri Muay Thai Club, Kenyalang Muay Thai Club, Kilas Petra Jaya Muay Thai Club and PS Bintulu Muay Thai Club.

The SSC/MSNS team particularly stood out, with their five athletes bagging five gold medals each. Notable contributors include Mohd Izzat Zulfaqar Hazrid, Muhd Nurizman Abdullah, Muhd Nuraikal Ismail, Maurien Hii Sie Lin and Intan Nirmala Mosidi.

In addition, the same team secured three silver and three bronze medals, courtesy of Nur Azirah Mohamad Yudi, Nurashfidah Daud, Mohamad Hasbullah Mood, Muhammad Khuzairi Zaidie, Zulhizam Zulhisham and Muhammad Nur Aiman Kamaruddin.

Five clubs also played a significant role, contributing eight gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Individual gold medallists included Muhammad Hakim Abdullah, Hani Annisa Ismail (Sting Muay Thai Sarawak), Declan Casey Daniel, Damian Casey Daniel (D30 Miri Muay Thai Club), Rizz Ezzandy Iswandy (Kenyalang Muay Thai Club), Mohamad Nur Zikir Aryan Mohd Nazri (Kilas Petra Jaya Muay Thai Club), Jonnah Barrac David Lambek, and Brian Issac Rhonald (PS Bintulu Muay Thai Club).

Silver medals were claimed by Nuno Redzha Norazli, Azra Elhariz Azly (Sting Muay Thai Sarawak), and Ezra Laxhman (D30 Miri Muay Thai Club), while bronze medals were earned by Dylan Casey Daniel, Zayne Akash Laxhman (D30 Miri Muay Thai Club), and Muhammad Zachary Abdullah (PS Bintulu Muay Thai Club).

Sarawak Muay Thai Association (PMNS) president Jumaat Ibrahim expressed satisfaction with the Sarawak athletes’ performance, especially those listed in the Sukma 2024 shadow squad.

He stressed the positive signal sent by the five gold medals from the shadow squad athletes, indicating a promising outlook for the Muay Thai squad at the actual Sukma event in August.

“This is part of the exposure series we will provide to our athletes to strengthen their preparations both physically and mentally. After this, our athletes will go through many more championships like this until Sukma begins.”

He also commended athletes from the five clubs for contributing to Sarawak’s success in this edition of the championship and expressed gratitude to SSC and MSNS for their support in facilitating the participation of Sarawak athletes in the event.

The five-day championship was organised by the Sabah Muay Thai Association and PERMAS.
