MIRI: With Shell Malaysia Upstream main office moving here from Kuala Lumpur by 2023 end, Sarawak Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin is optimistic that this augurs well for the city’s overall economic development.

He described the move as appropriate, giving the fact that the first oil well in Sarawak was discovered in 1910 at Canada Hill here.

“We already have being informed last year about this plan (Shell Malaysia Upstream office relocating to Miri), and I believe this transition is good in further developing oil and gas here.”

Lee was met after officiating the two-day legal engagement programme with Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) officers here on Wednesday (March 9).

Fifty SRB officers from Kuching, Sibu and Miri are taking part.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Transport II Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, principal assistant secretary of the ministry Rozita Kulai and SRB Region III assistant controller Leonard Luhat Laing.

Lee also suggested that Petronas do likewise “because there is still a lot of offshore and land exploration going on in Miri.”

He added that Petros should also consider setting up its office in Miri.

“If all oil and gas companies come to Miri, no doubt this division will be the hub for oil and gas industry, and Miri will continue to grow and we can achieve our Miri Greater Plan.”

Shell Malaysia Upstream’s new office is located at Miri Times Square. The new building is scheduled for occupancy by 2023 end.
